Obituary for Robert D. Crumpton

Bob was born at Cook County Hospital in Chicago Illinois. He grew up with his mother Fannie (Crumpton) Patterson and sister Yvonne.

He attended Wendell Phillips High School where he was very involved in academics and extracurricular clubs & sports. He was president of the Honor Society and Student Council; took on leadership roles in the Boys Service Club, Art Service Club, Boys Choir, Cross Country, and Track, as well as participating in Football, Baseball, and Basketball. Bob was Valedictorian of his high school graduating class.

Bob received a full scholarship to Western Michigan University where he not only competed in track at the national level but received his B.S. degree in Biology. Bob went on to receive his master’s degree in education from Chicago Teachers College, and PhD in Curriculum and Institution from University of Wisconsin Madison. From there he went after his law degree only to drop out due to illness. He never wanted to stop learning.

After graduating with his PhD, Bob moved to Minneapolis to accept a position in Urban Education and Teacher Training with the University of Minnesota. Bob spent a part of career teaching graduate students at numerous colleges and universities throughout the Minneapolis metro area.

Bob spent the last 30 years of his career with the Department of Education, serving in a multitude of different areas. Retiring at 74, only because Parkinson’s Disease prevented him from continuing. He would probably still be working today if he were alive and able.

Bob had a servant spirit and a passion to help educate underprivileged inner-city children and the educators who taught them. He volunteered much of his time in that effort.

Bob had a humble heart always giving of his time and resources to help others and yet never felt he had done enough. When he retired, he said he didn’t think he had done enough, not left a footprint.

Bob spent much of his spare time playing tennis and more tennis, golf, and playing chess with anyone who would play.

Bob married his current wife Susan March 3, 1984. They shared 35 years of marriage. He treasured time spent with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandson, as well as extended family and friends.

Bob is preceded in death by his mother Fannie Patterson, and survived by his sister Yvonne Wilson; current wife Susan Crumpton; children from previous marriage, Robert “Bobby” (Jan) Crumpton, Sharon Rene Crumpton, and current marriage son, Christopher Crumpton; grandchildren, Avery (Sam) Tompsett, Zoe Crumpton, and Phoebe Crumpton; great-grandson Zayden Crumpton; future Tompsett (due Jan. 2020); niece, Kelly (Ed) Gosa; and nephew Andre (Linda) Wilson.

Evans-Nordby funeral chapel in Osseo, MN handled my husband’s cremation and Celebration of Life service in July of 2023. I can’t say enough positive things about all aspects of my interactions with them. They reached out to help every step of the way—from planning the Celebration of Life service, the service itself, and after care contact. Brittney was the person I primarily worked with. She was kind, compassionate, knowledgeable, organized, and had great communication skills, which greatly helped in reducing my stress level. I plan to contact Evans-Nordby soon to pre-plan my own final arrangements.
