Obituary for Marie A. Swenson

Marie A. Swenson

age 98, passed away on November 20, 2020 at Maplewood Care Center.

Marie was born on October 31, 1922 in Saint Paul, MN the daughter of George and Anna Wallisch. Prior to her marriage she held jobs at Griggs Cooper Candy Factory and Sears Roebuck.

In 1962 she met her husband Floyd Swenson at a dance, and they married in 1963 where they became partners in all ways. Following her marriage Marie relocated to Brooklyn Center, MN where she lived until 2018 when she relocated to assisted living at the Homestead of Maplewood, MN.

Over the years Marie had many interests, activities and hobbies. She was a member of the Brooklyn Center Women’s Club, and the Eagles Club. Marie was an avid coupon clipper, did crafts and craft sales, gardening, traveling, fishing, dancing, crossword puzzles, read popular magazines, loved Twins baseball, performed cooking experiments, and enjoyed walking in the neighborhood to the malls. As Brooklyn Center developed over the years, she learned the shortcuts through the holes in the fences to get where she wanted to be in the most efficient way possible. Her favorite activity was talking with others; especially on the phone with her sisters, Gertrude Krenner and Dorothy Kodluboy and her sisters-in-law, Mary Wallisch and Mary Swenson.

Her cooking experiments resulted in her infamous 30-day friendship cake, and overly salty pickles, and on one occasion runny chocolate malt-o-meal. Her cooking successes resulted in Mounds Bars a family favorite, and she would always bring along an Angel Food Cake when invited to her brother Bob Wallisch’s house for a get together.

Throughout her life Aunt Marie had a great love of music and would share this love with her many nieces and nephews. The sharing started with playing records on her old Victrola of Deanna Durbin and Jane Powell, watching old musicals, and taking nieces to their first movie-South Pacific. Doing so encouraged one niece to become an accomplished pianist and involved with music all her life, and a nephew to fall in love with Jane Powell. Marie also loved discussing musical artists with another niece and receiving surprise packages from her in the mail that contained CD’s to add to her collection and listening pleasure

Later Marie entertained family and friends when she became a vocalist and percussionist in the group that became affectionately known as the “Swingin Swenson’s”. Floyd was the instrumentalist on the banjo and harmonica, and Marie the vocalist and percussionist on her tambourine. A well-known duet they performed for family and friends was “Okie From Muskogee". Later on, they became members of the “Uff Da” Band up at Sullivan Lake where they joined John Bull, Al Klebe, and Norm Barnes for jam sessions where Marie was a sometime vocalist, and an always ready and energetic percussionist on her tambourine.

As members of the Eagles Club Marie would love to dance polkas and waltzes with Floyd at the clubs’ social events when they were able to do so.

Marie loved family and friends and was a special Aunt to many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, and extended family. She especially enjoyed family gatherings and events and enjoyed entertaining and decorating the basement for the holidays or those special events. Marie also loved chocolate, ice cream and fried shrimp which she was treated to as often as possible by those in the know.

Marie loved to travel and in 1991 she and Floyd went on their “Dream Trip of a Lifetime” to Sweden to visit with Floyd’s relatives and tour the country. She also loved to visit Aneta, North Dakota Floyd’s hometown for the annual turkey roasts or to visit relatives there. Favorite local travel was going to Sullivan Lake to fish and jam with the “Uff Da” Band.

Preceded in death by husband, Floyd Swenson and siblings; Gertrude Krenner, Dorothy Kodluboy, and John, Joseph and Robert Wallisch. Survived and beloved by many.
