John Morton Rasmussen
March 15, 1942 - April 4, 2025
John Morton Rasmussen of Maple Grove passed away at home suddenly on April 4, 2025, at the age of 83. John was born on March 15th, 1942, in Winona, MN to Norman and Helen (Nell) Rasmussen. John grew up near Hutchinson, MN with his sisters Helen and Norma on the family's dairy farm. John served in the US Navy during Vietnam as an aircraft aviation electronics technician (ATAN), stationed at the Minneapolis naval air station.
John met Bonnie Avery at a singles dance at the Thunderbird hotel in Bloomington in 1971. They married on June 8th, 1972, in Forrest Lake. They moved into the new home they built and shared for 53 years, creating a new home for their combined six children. John worked as a machinist for Hydrocomp until he took a job with Rosemount Engineering, later BF Goodrich, as a machine shop supervisor for the aerospace division.
John and Bonnie both retired at age 57 and started traveling. They enjoyed taking many cruises to beautiful places. On land, they enjoyed many travels in their motorhome. They found a home away from home in Ft. Myers Beach, Florida where they spent 20 plus years as snowbirds to avoid the Minnesota winters. They were always active enjoying biking, tennis, pickleball, darts, square dancing and bowling. They also volunteered at the Salvation Army helping with Christmas children’s toys.
John was an avid outdoorsman enjoying time with his family, hunting, fishing, boundary water trips, camping, and sailing. He taught all six kids to water ski and Jill to sail. Water skiing was a big part of family vacations. The family still gets together annually for a camping weekend. John always had interest in family and the activities they are involved in.
Survived by wife Bonnie of 53 years; children, Tim (Michelle) Rasmussen, Mike Larson, Jill Rasmussen, Debbie Holman (James Woodworth), Joel (Jill) Rasmussen and Jeff (Chrissy) Rasmussen; grandchildren, Jacob (Kristina), Zachary (Trista), Annie, Meagan (Patrick), Joshua (Samantha), Jessica (Conley), Jeremiah (Mallory), Jamie (Jason), Ashley (Joe), Aaron, Kylie, Timmie, and Cookie; great grandchildren, Jaxson, Taytum, Rowen, Alex, Ella, Allie, Shane, Sophia, Charlie, and Henry; sisters, Helen Kieper (children Cathi, Pat and Dave), and Norma Leverson (children Erik and Sonja) and their families; brother-in-law, Chuck (Louise) Avery (children Jennifer (Dave) Rands and Annette (Ted) Zehelein) and their families; nephew, Scott (Ginger) Avery (child Karen).
