Obituary for John Albert McGinty

Age 88, of Osseo, passed away on October 31, 2024 in Phoenix, AZ.

John was born in 1936 into a loving & caring Irish family. He attended Ascension grade school, DeLaSalle High School and then transferred to North High and graduated in 1955. He enlisted in the Army right after high school and was discharged in 1957. He held numerous jobs after the service and after meeting Bev he was employed at American Fruit & Product/Kraft Foods for 32 years and retired at the age of 58. After retiring John did volunteer work at the Dassel Nursing Home and was awarded the “Volunteer of the Year” award in 2007. He kept all the little old ladies smiling.

John met Bev in 1962 at his brother Charlie’s going away party before his departure to the Navy. Charlie was Bev’s best friend from grade school all the way thru high school. It must have been love at first sight because John proposed to Bev after only 4 months of dating. They were married the following year on August 2rd, 1963. In June of 1962 John joined AA and achieved 62 years of sobriety which he was very proud of and always showed everyone the sobriety coins he would receive.

John and Bev adopted 3 children thru the Catholic Welfare in Minneapolis. They were all only 3 weeks old when we received these special miracles. Timothy 1965, Kathryn 1967 and Daniel 1970. John was a very devoted Dad and very involved in their lives. He attended every sporting event they were involved in and was always the loudest cheer leader they could wish for.

We lived in Robbinsdale for 15 years and then in 1980 we had a home built on Big Swan Lake in Dassel, MN where we lived for 36 years. John continued his devotion to his wife and children.

In 2001 our first granddaughter Jordan was born and 2003 our grandson Kyle. John never felt such love for them both. He attended almost every swimming event, hockey & baseball game they participated in. Again, he was their loudest cheer leader.

John and Bev loved to travel and enjoyed several special trips. In 2004 John and his 4 brothers, Don, Tom, Tim & Charlie took a trip to Ireland to see where their ancestors came from. It was a trip of their lifetime. In 2013 for their 50th anniversary John took Bev back to Ireland so she could see all the beauty he had experienced. In 2005 we started spending our winters in AZ. John loved golfing, bowling and of course meeting new people. This would have been our 19th year at Rock Shadows Resort.

In 2016 we moved from Dassel to Osseo as the lake home was getting too much to take care of. Realife was now our home with much less work.

John always had a smile on his face, a twinkle in his eyes and a kind word or smart remark to every stranger he met. God love you John and you will be missed.

John is survived by his beloved wife, Beverly; children, Timothy (Cheryl), Kathryn, and Daniel (Nicole); grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

I highly recommend the team at Evans Nordby. This past weekend, they assisted as we buried my mom. Twelve years ago, they assisted as we buried my dad. Brittney and the staff are so comforting, easy to work with and compassionate. They make every decision simple, and the whole process as painless as possible. I am so happy that we chose this funeral home, and encourage you to consider using them in your time of need.
