Obituary for Joanne Louise Hastings

We mourn the loss of our mother with great love and devotion. Yet, we are thankful that she has stepped into eternity with God. Joanne Louise Hastings passed away peacefully on Mother’s Day, May 14, 2023 at the age of 96. She is preceded in death by her husband, Frank Stanley Hastings, parents Joseph Alexander Holmes and Neva Hamilton Holmes, brothers, Ben and Jim Holmes, sisters, Virginia Hervey (Walley), Gayle Nadeau (Lawrence), Ramona Sadler (William) and son William Eugene Hastings.

Joanne married Frank Stanley Hastings in 1943 and they had five children. In 1956 they moved from Minnesota to Texas where Frank joined the Border Patrol, subsequently transferring to North Dakota, Alaska and back to Minneapolis in 1975. After Frank retired in 1985 they traveled during the winter months but always returned to her treasured cabin at Lake Hattie for the summer. There she cherished her time spent visiting with neighbors and friends, especially evening “toddies” on the porch. She also enjoyed bird watching, gardening, walking, fishing, making exceptional needle art, playing cards and BINGO and watching Wheel of Fortune. Above all else, she loved talking with and about her children, grands, great grands and great-great grands. Joanne deeply loved her siblings and admired her nieces and nephews. She remained close with her cousins throughout their lives. She made many friends over her lifetime and stayed in touch with a remarkable number of them. Company was always fun and welcomed, but she also enjoyed solitude and projects. She loved to attend church in Pine River and in Mobile regularly and today we are comforted that she is seeing Jesus face to face.

Joanne is survived by her daughters, Catherine Hastings Woolery, Mary Hastings (Carol), Christine (Link) Hastings Oxborough Sommer, son, Joseph (Laura) Hastings and daughters-in-law, Penny Schwartz Hastings and Laura DeRouen Hastings. Her grandchildren; Paul (Milissa) Hastings, Kate (Mike) LaForge, Susan (Philip) Engel, Matthew Woolery, John Woolery, Mike (Kristy) Konte, James (Kimberly) Konte, Mary Laura (Wesley) Hastings Carlisle and Anna (Michael) Hastings Haydel, great-grandchildren; Joseph (Libby) Hastings, Anna Grace (Connor) Davis, Seth La Forge, Grant La Forge, Elise La Forge, Rhiannon (Michael) Williams, Erica Woolery, Thomas Engle, Alex Engle, Evan Konte (son of Michael), Reid Konte (son of Michael), Michael Konte (son of James), Trevor Konte (son of James) and great-great grandchildren, Bowen Davis, Theo Williams and Lilly Williams also survive her.

I highly recommend the team at Evans Nordby. This past weekend, they assisted as we buried my mom. Twelve years ago, they assisted as we buried my dad. Brittney and the staff are so comforting, easy to work with and compassionate. They make every decision simple, and the whole process as painless as possible. I am so happy that we chose this funeral home, and encourage you to consider using them in your time of need.
