James Joseph Schmitz, a beloved father, devoted husband, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on March 21, 2026, at the age of 91. Born on June 8, 1934, in Saint Cloud, Minnesota, Jim lived a full life marked by honor, joy, and deep commitment to his family and friends.
A proud veteran of the United States Army, Jim served his country with distinction. His professional career was equally notable as he devoted many years to the insurance industry, notably at CNA and as a partner at Benefits, Inc. Group Insurance. Known for his integrity and work ethic, he earned the respect of colleagues and clients alike.
Jim was an outdoorsman at heart, finding solace in nature through avid fishing, particularly muskie fishing, as well as deer and duck hunting. He cherished the peaceful moments spent in the wilderness, where he could connect with the beauty of the world around him. A passionate musician, Jim delighted in playing the harmonica, often sharing tunes that brought warmth and laughter to family gatherings.
As a devoted family man, he took great pride in his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, encouraging them and celebrating their achievements. His keen sense of humor and lighthearted spirit made him a friend to many, and his kindness touched the lives of everyone he met. A dedicated Catholic, Jim lived a life grounded in faith.
Preceded in death by parents, Clem & Annette; sisters, Mary Ann Maehren, Joan Wiik; brothers-in-law, Eddie Maehren, Buzz Weidner; sister-in-law, Rita Stuth; daughter-in-law, Carrie Schmitz.
Jim will be dearly missed by all who knew him, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and integrity. He is survived by his beloved wife, Rosemary; children, Tom (Pam), Katie (Greg) Paulus, Jackie (Tim) Peterzen, Amy (Larry) Umphrey; 12 grandchildren, Max, Erin, Danny, Michael (Erika), John (Erica), Thomas, Andrea (Andy), Timmy (Ashley), Laura (Ben), Ben, Emma, Nora; 12 great-grandchildren; sisters, Jane Weidner, Liz (Kirk) Dalhstrom; brothers-in-law, Alf Wiik, Gerald Stuth; and many other relatives & friends.
Family and friends will gather to celebrate Jim’s remarkable life, sharing fond memories and stories in remembrance of a man who was everybody's best friend. Mass of Christian Burial 10:30AM Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 9100 93rd Ave N., Brooklyn Park, MN 55445, with visitation 1 hour prior to the mass at church. Following the services, Jim will be laid to rest at St. Vincent’s Cemetery in Osseo, MN. After Jim's graveside services, there will be a time of fellowship and food back at St. Vincent de Paul Church in Regan Hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages contributions in Jim’s memory to Sharing & Caring Hands or St. Vincent de Paul Cemetery Fund that reflects his spirit of giving and love for community.
