David M. Schmidt

David M. Schmidt
February 19, 1950 - April 26, 2025
On April 26, David M. Schmidt, age 75, was called home to be with the Lord.
David was born on February 19, 1950 to Verne and Beverly Schmidt in Minneapolis, MN. After graduating from North High School, he went on to work at Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. He met his wife, Sonia, at the Karate Center where they practiced Tae Kwon Do.
David served in the United States Army and later continued his commitment to service through the Army Reserves.
After his honorable discharge, he attended Hennepin Technical College to become a welder. One of his welding jobs was making industrial pizza ovens at Despatch Industries. His last job before retirement was at Wilson’s Leather as a materials handler. Interestingly, his grandmother Florence also worked for the same company when it was known as Berman Buckskin.
Throughout his life, David found joy and fulfillment in a wide range of activities. He had a passion for Tae Kwon Do, scuba diving whether in open water or under the ice, and the unique sport of underwater hockey. His love for the water extended to shipwreck restoration, where he contributed to preserving maritime history as a member of the Great Lakes Shipwreck Preservation Society. On land, David enjoyed attending motorcycle rallies and was an avid participant in softball games and lunchtime soccer matches.
As a dedicated collector, David took pride in gathering sports memorabilia and other treasured items. His enthusiasm for sports extended beyond personal interests; he was a devoted supporter at his daughters' and grandchildren's activities, cheering them on with great pride.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Verne and Beverly; brother, Mark; and sister, Karla.
David is survived by his caring wife, Sonia; daughters, Laura and Heather (Chris); grandchildren, Kaylee, Talen, Dahlia, and Cece; sister, Karen (Dave); nieces, Kelly, Kendal (Adam), and Lynnette (Jordan); nephew, Christopher; and other relatives and friends.
His belief in Jesus Christ brings comfort knowing that he is now at peace. We love you David, Dad, Pop Pop.
